APPLICATIONS GUIDE
The changes to the application and revision process are as follows:
THE APPLICATION ROUNDS ARE NOW OPEN FOR TWO WEEKS. Applications are open the first two weeks of each month. Reserves will be open on the last two weeks of the month.
REVISIONS WILL HAVE A TIME LIMIT. If you do not get your revisions in within 72 hours we will consider the application dropped. If there are extenuating circumstances keeping you from getting revisions done please let the mods know and something can be arranged.
REPLYING TO THE TAKEN LIST AND PLAYER CONTACT. You have 72 hours after acceptance to reply to the taken characters and player contact lists. If you do not your character will be considered dropped. Again, if there are extenuating circumstances please try to let the mods know.
REJECTION POLICY. If you are rejected your second application for the character in question will be judged more closely. Please be sure when reapplying to follow all the guidelines and take careful account of what the initial reasons for rejection were.
After your second rejection you will have to wait an application round before you can reapply. After a third rejection you will be unable to apply for this character. This decision will be final and not up for further debate, as the mods will not make this decision lightly.
That’s right, folks. We realize that some characters simply don’t have a whole lot of canon time to write eight well thought out paragraphs on, but we do expect you to at least make the minimum requirements for personality (2-3 paragraphs with 350 words of in depth analysis, no regurgitating wiki information, please) first and third person samples (three lines of dialogue for the former and 200 words for the latter). Failure to meet these requirements will result in an automatic rejection and you will have to wait until the next apping cycle, no exceptions.
On the subject of not having enough canon to support a fleshed out personality section, we do allow applicants to use the AU application and post it in the OU page as long as you make it clear that this is what you plan on doing. You are still required to meet the minimum word count, but it allows you the chance to use headcanon for personality traits that may not be supported in canon and give your own interpretation of why events in their medium have shaped them into the character they are now.
Now, AU and OU can be a little tricky, especially if the mods aren’t very familiar with the canon you’re apping from. Abax’s policy on AU characters is as follows: while the origins of their story may be different, their core personality should be largely unchanged from their canon counter part. Say someone applied for Jack Sparrow but instead of making him a pirate during the 1740’s (give or take), he’s now a marauder from the year 2748 with his own starship, the Black Pearl. That would be acceptable, as long as he’s still (mostly) a good man at heart, even if he may be the occasional scallywag and have no problem stealing people’s unattended belongings and be a little off in the head.
What we require of you is to demonstrate how this canon is different, in detail. Providing a wikipedia link for your character’s history is acceptable if you’re only making a slight alteration but we still want to hear in your own words how the world has been altered, what events differed from the OU and how it influenced your character. Please keep in mind that the mods may not be the most canon familiar and request that you explain this as if you were telling the events to someone who is not familiar with the canon in question at all. Should you have any questions regarding this policy, or whether or not it applies to a character please direct them to the F.A.(W).Q. page.
PLEASE NOTE: While a certain amount of headcanon is acceptable in an OU application the mods reserve larger amounts of headcanon for AU applications and OU characters who have extremely limited canon time. In cases of OU applications with too much headcanon revisions may be asked for.
Let’s face it, having a character post that they are new and don’t understand what’s happening doesn’t really show off what is unique and different about them, doesn’t tell us much beyond that they react the same way most people would in their situation. What we’re looking for is something that gives us insight to their personality and attitude, a sample that tells us just who this character is.
We understand that not everyone is a chatterbox, so there are a few options open to you:
-Create a post toabaxopoly, Abax’s very own musebox created to test drive muses and allow potential appers to create samples for the game. Things posted to Abaxopoly will not be considered in game canon. However, you may approach this as though you are making an introductory post to the community, or as though your character has been in Abax for some time. You can link a post or thread from Abaxopoly to fulfill the first person or third person sample requirement, depending on what kind of post you made.
-Linking previous game/dear_mun/musebox posts. These tend to give us a better idea on what to expect.
-Pretend your character is already established. Browse through the event tags on the OOC comm and have your character react to one of those; maybe they were just eaten by a snowman and managed to escape, or are handcuffed to a long time enemy.
-Make a post regarding something they feel strongly about. Lawlessness? In my Abax? Uh uh, I don’t think so, let me rant and rave about how you depraved citizens shouldn’t be ransacking all those shops on a whim.
-PLEASE NOTE: When writing a first person sample PLEASE try to give us something more than simply 'waking up in the morgue' first post samples. While we do not forbid them, we prefer to encourage other methods of supplying voice. These posts can often be hard to judge, as they can fall under a 'generic' feeling or voice to them. Should you choose to use this as your sample please make sure it exemplifies something about the characters personality, or more than likely we will ask you for revisions. Examples of what we would prefer in place of these first person samples are links to other threads, first person samples made out of Abax (in their home verse, or otherwise), or samples of cases where the character has been situated in Abax for some time.
That isn’t to say you cannot do a post detailing how they are confused and don’t know where they are, but if you do, make it reflect back on your character. Include any mannerisms, speech patterns, and insight to how your character will react to their strange, new environment. Are they detail oriented? Maybe they noticed that pile of clothes the welcome committee laid out for them weren’t folded properly. Are they especially paranoid and distrustful? Those toe tags sure know a lot of information about you, say something about them!
So, you wanna app into Abax with some pre-established CR and development from another game.
Awesome, here’s some things we’re looking for:
1. Who.
We don’t expect you to comb through every single thread and detail every single conversation they’ve had with a person, down to “and then the Master Chief gave Vash the Stampede the recipe to his mom’s fabulous casserole and it was delicious.” No, what we’re looking for is a comprehensive list of people they are close to, are not on good terms with; people who have had a significant impact on your character.
2. How.
We’d also like to see in your own words, how these relationships developed. So Sherlock Holmes thinks the Joker is a twat and his makeup is tacky. Okay, so tell us why they don’t get along. Like remember that time they were glued together and the Joker kept him up all night, singing show tunes in his ear? Explain the development to us! And please, don’t just link us to threads. Tell it to us as if we aren’t familiar with your character’s personalities. “Sherlock found the Joker’s crooning atrocious because the Joker sings off key and as Sherlock is a perfectionist, it grated on his last nerve. Also, it was four in the bloody morning.”
3. What.
Your character has been in a game for a while and gone through some growth. It happens, and change is great! Maybe your self centered teenager has grown up into a well-rounded, mature adult who puts others’ needs before hers. Or maybe Ron Weasley has developed a fear of bees. Getting stung on your way to the bathroom everyday because of your eccentric beekeeper roommate would do that to a person. Whatever the case, we’re looking for a summary of how events and conversations led to these developments. Basically, who (or what) changed your character for the better (or worse)?
